Extra Help

Extra Help is a federal program that assists with prescription drug plan premiums, annual deductibles and co-payments. To qualify and be automatically enrolled in Extra Help, you must have Medicare and meet certain income and resource limits. If you’re qualified for the program, you will receive a card in the mail with information regarding Rx (referring to prescription drugs) or PDP (Prescription Drug Plan) approximately 3 months before your Medicare effective date. The card will come from a private insurance company and will become effective on the same date your Medicare coverage begins.

Income and Resource Limits as of January 2020

Individual Annual Income at $19,140 or less (approximately $1,595 per month) Married Couple Annual Income at $25,860 or less (approximately $2,155 per month)
Individual Resources (Savings & Investments) not more than $14,610 Married Couple Resources (Savings & Investments) not more than $29,160

Most Common Resource Exclusions Include:

Primary residence, Personal possessions, Vehicle(s), Resources not easily converted to cash, such as jewelry or home furnishings, Property needed for self-support, such as rental property or land to grow produce for home consumption, Non-business property essential to self-support, Life insurance policies, Burial expenses

Other Money Held is Not Counted for Nine Months:

Retroactive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments, Housing or relocation assistance, Tax advances and refunds related to earned income and child tax credits, Compensation received as a crime victim, State or local government relocation assistance
